FOTO® Data used in paper that received Rose Excellence In Research Award

Drs. Diane Jette and Alan Jette received the Rose Excellence In Research Award for Excellence in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Research for their paper “Physical therapy and health outcomes in patients with spinal impairments”, which was published in Physical Therapy 1996;76(9):930-945.

Drs. Jette and Jette used a FOTO® data set of patients with lumbar (n=739) or cervical (n=358) spine impairments with complete data from intake to discharge to study the effects of physical therapy on health outcomes. Specifically, they investigated the pattern of health outcomes in patients with spinal impairments and the relationship of outcomes to the physical therapy services provided in 68 physical therapy practices across the United States.

The results of their study were that the patients reported improvement in all health scales. Inclusion of endurance exercise was most consistently associated with better outcomes. Inclusion of heat or cold modalities was associated with poorer outcomes. Their conclusions suggest that physical therapists take a broader view of patient-related goals and documentation of outcomes. Their results also provide evidence that the type of physical therapy intervention is related to the patient self-reported outcomes.
