The programming for PPS 2016, the annual conference for the Private Practice Section of the American Physical Therapy Association, looks fantastic! I have a few recommendations based on the session's content. The focus will be sessions that include something about quality and clinical outcomes. I do have a couple of surprises that I had to toss in because I have a feeling those sessions will be quite interesting.
UTILIZING ICD-10 AND PAYER GUIDANCE TO DOCUMENT EFFECTIVE CLINICAL OUTCOMES
So much has happened over the last 25 years that it amazes me. Technology plays a huge role in accomplishing day-to-day activities. We've become "task driven" in our behaviors to ensure all that needs to be completed is completed in a timely manner. The technology that we choose is imperative to the success that we achieve. My interpretation of this session: you'll learn the importance of integrated technology used to its fullest to help you not only meet various regulations, but also to succeed in the care you provide.
UNDERSTANDING PATIENT ENGAGEMENT, SATISFACTION, AND LOYALTY METRICS TO IMPROVE CLIENT RETENTION AND GENERATE NEW BUSINESS
This topic is one that is typically missed during the educational experience. I shared my thoughts about patient engagement earlier this year in a series of blog posts. In my mind, the only way to truly measure this area of business is to track returning patients and how new patients hear about you and choose your services. I'd be interested to hear what percentage of returning patients and word of mouth indicates that you have created engaged and loyal patients. Satisfaction is kind of weird, in my opinion. You can have satisfied patients without positive results. You can have satisfied patients yet never, ever see them again. Although loyalty metrics are nice to know... more importantly are actions taken. Will previous patients truly choose you again and refer to you any chance they get?
In the most recent software update, FOTO allows you to include a loyalty metric. "How likely is it that you would recommend this facility to a friend or colleague?"
ARE YOU AN ID-10-T? STRATEGIES FOR STREAMLINING YOUR PRACTICE WITH TECHNOLOGY
I had to laugh at this title... my poor brain read it as an ICD-10-T. I couldn't figure out what the T was for... it wasn't sequela. Ah... but, my lil brain caught on and I laughed. This will definitely be an interesting session. Technology opens the door for opportunity. The clinical experience can really be improved (as long as the technology doesn't fail). Batteries need to stay charged and internet and wi-fi need to function flawlessly. A really cool aspect with technology is the opportunity for clincians to gain dashboards of feedback. The right technology can also increase engagement with your patients. A new talent clincians will acquire: using and managing technology to its fullest.
FOTO has an autoprint feature so patient specific reports are at your clinicians' fingertips for an engaged conversation. In its most recent software update, FOTO includes a very brief report to engage patients with their results. Patients can also choose to email themselves their special report to keep for their records.
BUNDLED PAYMENT: INTERACTIVE SESSION ON EXPERIENCE WITH CMS BUNDLE/CJR PROGRAMS
2016 began the bundled payment initiative. The comprehensive joint replacement program is very focused on reducing the short term costs associated with poorer quality of care: infection and rehospitalization rates. Although that may be the focus, there is also an aspect related to outcomes of care that are important to the daily lives of patients. This could be exciting times for those in private practice. The number of patients undergoing total joint replacements is higher than it has ever been. It is doubtful that quick access to outpatient care only provided in a hospital system is realistic. Hopefully in this session you will learn the opportunity that awaits and learn what data you need to be prepared to create business opportunities. Earlier this year, I wrote a post "Be Ready for Bundled Payments in 5 Steps." The focus of my writing was with a payer. This session should focus on something different: meeting with hospital executives to increase referrals for patients in the bundled payment initiative.
Although FOTO's assessment involves computer adaptive testing, optional assessments are available within the system. Both the HOOS, Jr. and the KOOS, Jr. can be administered to meet the bundled payment comprehensive joint replacement program.
USE OF CLINICAL OUTCOMES DATA TO DEMONSTRATE PHYSICAL THERAPISTS’ VALUE
This will be quite the interesting session. No matter what anyone says, there is no "easy button" when it comes to patient reported outcomes. Many rehabilitation professionals would only like to have one patient reported outcome measurement tool. Speaking from the heart, in my opinion, diversity of practice setting and patient needs in each setting create a huge hurdle. For example... the inpatient setting discharges patients with the bare minimum or even less level of function. The questions being asked for an inpatient setting: are the right services being provided and what setting will this patient most likely be discharged? The goal for inpatient: get the patient stable and out of the high cost care setting into the next safest option. The outpatient setting ends an episode of care with patients functioning in the highest level of function possible. The single question being asked: what is the expected level of function this patient should attain via services? One, single measurement tool for both settings would 1) be humungous and 2) not really have the capability to answer the question being asked. The best design will definitely entail using computer adaptive testing. Paper and pencil assessment tools were the rave many years ago... technology is where it is at now.
FOTO has an outcomes management system is built on three important steps. The three steps are required for predicting final outcome for an episode of care. The three steps required to help you prove your value: classification of patients, risk adjustment for variables known to affect clinical outcomes and predictive analytics. Reports are created for all stakeholders: patients, providers, physicians and payers are based on the three step process.
LEARN METHODS, CONCEPTS, AND PLATFORMS TO ENSURE A FULL COURSE OF TREATMENT REGARDLESS THE NUMBER OF THERAPISTS OR LOCATIONS
Dangers, Opportunities and Strengths.... from your patient's perspective. What we provide is so much more than a CPT code defined intervention. Connecting with your patients is really important. I believe research even supports the value of a therapeutic relationship. I have a feeling John will touch on some points that you can begin using on Monday.
FOTO reports provide hope and engage patients. I know that creating a relationship takes time... and the first time you meet a patient, you don't really know them. FOTO reports can help begin the conversation with your patients.
My next two suggestions come from my heart. Sadly, you'll have to make a choice because they are occurring at the same time. I am ordering based on their order of appearance in the PPS program because I honestly can't choose one over the other.
POSITIONING YOUR INDEPENDENT PRACTICE FOR LONG-TERM SUCCESS IN A CHANGING MARKETPLACE
No one knows the future... what we can see is the desire for large, consolidated networks. Although we see this, we don't want to lose our freedom as an independent practice owner. This session should be interesting because it will discuss a solution that may meet future needs while maintaining a level of freedom owning and running a private practice.
RESONANT LEADERSHIP AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE: CAN WE REALLY END DRAMA IN ORGANIZATIONS?
Mindfulness, hope and compassion.... three attributes in leaders that help connect, create harmony and motivate. I'm thinking the world would be a better place for all if these attributes dominated society.
Some of the FOTO team will be at the conference. Definitely stop by Booth #315 to say hello! If you aren't familiar with all that FOTO has to offer, I'm sure the team would love to talk to you about outcomes.
This year the team wants to share how FOTO's marketing tools make is easier to differentiate yourself from competitors. If you're wondering how FOTO is an investment and improves your bottom line, you'll be able to have that conversation also.
For those of you who are not able to attend the conference, FOTO team would love to hear from you too!
Until next time,
