Focus on Therapeutic Outcomes, Inc. Announces New Risk Adjustment Models for Orthopedic and Pelvic Floor Conditions

Focus on Therapeutic Outcomes, Inc. (FOTO) released  newly advanced risk adjustment models that allow healthcare providers, patients and payers to fairly compare outcomes of care.  New risk adjustment models have been developed for multiple Orthopedic conditions and Pelvic Floor (Urinary and Bowel conditions).

"The most exciting advancement centers around being able to risk adjust for many types of surgical intervention (for instance size of rotator cuff repair, hip and knee replacements, etc.),"  said Trish Hayes, FOTO's Director of Provider Relations.  "Also, we are now able to assign calculated risk to specific comorbidities as each relates to a particular condition."

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is demanding more scientifically rigorous approaches to risk adjustment. Value-based healthcare will require  providers and payers to align quality and financial incentives through payment model advances such as the new Medicare Quality Payment Program.  In an April 5, 2017 presentation on Episode-Based Cost Measure Development, Medicare identified risk adjustment as one of the five essential cost measure components to improve quality patient care.

“Meaningful comparisons of outcomes cannot be made without risk-adjustment,” said Al Amato, PT, MBA, FOTO President.  “FOTO is continuously improving risk adjustment to account for factors outside the clinician’s control that can influence outcomes and help avoid penalizing clinicians treating more complex or less healthy patients”

The FOTO Outcomes Management System consists of the largest outcomes database and registry focused on risk adjusted, patient centered results of care.  The new risk adjustment models were developed for orthopedic conditions using rigorous statistical methods and massive sample sizes ranging from 20,000 to 200,000 for each condition.  The new models build on the past by adding new categories to help factor in the multitudes of variables that influence outcomes of patient care that are beyond the clinician’s control: previous treatment, post-surgery type, use of medication, exercise habits, payer categories, and the relative influence of up to 30 comorbidities.

The New 13 Risk Adjustment Categories and Variables

  1. Care Type
  2. Impairment/Body Part
  3. Intake Score (Continuous variable)
  4. Gender (2 Variables)
  5. Age (Continuous variable)
  6. Acuity ( 7 Variables)
  7. Surgical history (4 variables)
  8. Exercise History (3 variables)
  9. Medication Use for Condition (2 variables)
  10. Number of Comorbidities (up to 30 variables)
  11. Payer type (16 Variables)
  12. Previous Treatment for Condition ( 2 variables)
  13. Post Surgical Type (70-80 Variables)

About FOTO

FOTO is a Knoxville, TN based corporation that has been continuously improving solutions to efficiently measure and reliably report functional outcomes for the rehabilitation industry for over 25 years. FOTO’s web-based solutions are risk-adjusted to enable fair and accurate measurement and predictions of the expected improvement in patients’ functional status. Approximately 16.9 million patient surveys have been compiled in the FOTO database, and researchers have utilized FOTO data to publish over 90 articles on functional outcomes in refereed medical journals. These publications have led the way in enhancing the science of measuring outcomes and the use of outcomes in payment methodologies. FOTO is the standard in measuring functional outcomes in rehabilitation.
