Knoxville, TN (PRWEB) May 19, 2016

The winning research proposal from Dr. Lentz seeks to reduce musculoskeletal pain and opioid abuse by developing an improved  version of the OSPRO-YF measure. Specifically, the project uses Item Response Theory (IRT) to improve OSPRO-YF measures of pain associated psychological distress like fear avoidance, negative mood, and positive affect/coping. The IRT-derived OSPRO-YF promises to provide insight into improving patient care and lowering healthcare costs with more precise and reliable estimates of psychological domain performance. When fully developed, the new OSPRO-YF measure could be incorporated into the FOTO Outcomes Management System.

FOTO’s Hart Research Grant program was created to fund promising research that will lead to improvements in the quality of care for patients with musculoskeletal or neurological conditions who are referred to clinical rehabilitation services. FOTO seeks proposals each year in the fall, and proposals are subjected to a peer-review process coordinated by Mark Werneke, PT, MS, Dip, MDT and member of FOTO’s Research Advisory Board. Grants are given in the spring.

“Musculoskeletal pain is a prevalent and costly health condition with far-reaching public consequences including chronic pain, disability, and opioid-related addiction,” said Al Amato, MBA, PT, co-founder and President of FOTO. “It is important to help clinicians detect and manage psychological factors to quickly identify better treatment approaches to support the goal of safely getting patients better, faster.”

The D.L. Hart Memorial Outcomes Research Grant program honors Dennis Hart PT, PhD (deceased 2012) and funds medical practitioners and researchers whose research will improve care quality and cost-effectiveness in healthcare.
